Analytical data often have days, months, weeks, or years and sometimes you need to identify a specific day of the month. For instance, if you need to find out the beginning date of the week to plan your schedule ahead, what would you do? Excel works best in finding a specific number or date. You can find whatever you need with the help of Excel tools and formulas.

Excel has many formulas that work extraordinarily that make your work super easy. Suppose, you have 16th Jan 2022, and you need to find out the 1st Jan, you can simply subtract the number of days from it. Isn’t it that easy?

We have 3 different methods that work best to find the first day of the current month in Excel. Let’s get started:

Method 1: Join the Date, Year, Month, and TODAY Functions

This trick uses a formula in which DATE, YEAR, MONTH, and TODAY functions are used to compute the first day of the current month in Excel.

Here are the easy-to-go steps:

  1. Firstly, put the formula given below in cell C4.

=DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()), 1)

This formula covers:

TODAY() value that simply returns today’s date.

YEAR(TODAY()) value returns the current year.

MONTH(TODAY()) returns the current month.

DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY(),1), it adds 01 as day 1 with the current year and month.

  1. Once the formula is entered in the cell, now press the ENTER button.

In cell C4, you will get the results in terms of the first day of the current month.

Method 2: Join the DAY and TODAY Functions to Return on the First Day of the Current Month

In Excel, now we will find out the first day of the current month using another method. By joining the DAY_ and the TODAY_ functions, we can get the first day of the current month in Excel.

You can use this formula by following the steps given below:

  1. Choose cell C4 and enter the given formula:

=TODAY() –DAY(TODAY())+1

In this formula, we have values:

TODAY() value returns the current date.

DAY(TODAY()) returns only the day of the current date.

TODAY()-DAY(TODAY())+1 value subtracts today’s day from today’s date by adding 1 as a day. This way we will get the first day of the current month.

  1. Once the formula is entered, now press the ENTER button to process the formula.

After the formula is processed, in cell C4 you will get the desired results in terms of the first day of the current month.

Method 3: Join the EOMONTH & TODAY Functions to Find the First Day of the Current Month in Excel

Here comes another trick to find out the first day of the current month using EOMONTH_ and the TODAY_ functions.

We have to combine these two functions to make a formula for the desired results.

  1. Firstly, you need to enter the given formula in cell C4.

= EOMONTH(TODAY(), -1)+1

This formula covers:

TODAY() value returns the current date.

EOMONTH(TODAY(),-1) returns the last day of the previous month.

EOMONTH(TODAY(),-1) +1 adds 1 to the last day of the previous month.

This is how we find Excel first day of month.

  1. Now, hit the ENTER button.

In cell C4, you will get the desired results once the ENTER button is pressed.

Get the First Day of Any Month in Excel

Did you even find it difficult to find out Excel’s first day of month?

If so, follow the steps given above and get your results. In other cases, if you ever need to find out the first day of any month, then you will have to follow the steps given below.

1. Enter the given formula in cell C5.

=B5-DAY(B5)+1

This formula covers:

B5 value that consists of input data.

DAY(B5) takes out the day from the date in cell B5.

B5-DAY(B5)+1 subtracts the day from the date in cell B5 and then adds 1.

This is how this formula works to produce the desired results.

2. Hit ENTER button to put the formula.

3. Place the mouse cursor at the right-bottom side of the cell in which you have entered the formula. You will see an icon like plus named “Fill Handle.”

4. Drag that icon from cell C5 to C12.

You will see the first day of all input dates on the next screen.

This is it. Now, you have thorough understanding of how you can find the Excel first day of month whether it is the current month or you want to find any random month. Keep practicing the Excel tools and formulas, so that your productivity level increases.
